frida
Stitched area 11” x 11” Stitched on 18 ct. mono canvas

Inspired by the geometric patterns found in historical mosaics, and tiles, “Frida” is a sampler of canvas stitches suitable for finishing as a wall hanging. This class introduces the canvasworker to intermediate and advanced stitches while creating textures and exploring techniques such as traming, laid fillings and a variety of geometric type stitches. The project is stitched in DMC #5 and #8 perle cotton, Vineyard Silk Shimmer, Threadworx #8 Braid, Kreinik #8 Braid and 1/16” Ribbon, Bijoux, Caron Impressions, Ribbon Floss and is finished with Swarovski crystals and pearls. The colour scheme was inspired by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo whose sense of colour was dramatic and bold. Students will work on a practice canvas as well as the piece canvas, covering all the stitches in the design in class. The colour palette consists of Clay Violet, Earthy Red, Rich Teal and Indigo Blue. This piece won the State Award at the ANG 2014 Chicago Seminar. This piece is an Intermediate/Advanced level piece.

Stitches include Scotch and ½ Scotch, Oval Rhodes, Rice, Satin, Basketweave, Round, Star and Dagger Amadeus, Jessica, Smyrna and Ray.
